Our animals

Our breeding herd of Tamworth pigs live in beech woodland called Lucy Wood. In this natural environment they farrow outside with access to farrowing huts to keep out of the cold. The pigs usually ignore these though and use their natural instinct and build nests in the wood instead!

Our pigs breed all year round which keeps a constant supply of pork for the shop. We do not wean pigs until 12 weeks old – it can be as low as 3 weeks in commercial herds - and our pigs remain outside to grow. We don’t tail dock; teeth clip or castrate any of our pigs which is commonplace in most commercial systems. We aim to keep our pigs in a natural environment and they certainly seem contented.

Our Dexter cows are free to roam and graze our lush pastures from spring to autumn. We do make sure our cows are housed during winter and feed them hay and silage. Most commercial beef farmers house cattle all year round and feed them a high protein cereal diet which produces fast growing cattle and a lack of flavour in the beef. Because our cattle lead their lives in a natural way the meat they produce has an exceptional flavour.

We also run a commercial flock of Mule and Mule cross Texel Ewes. We lamb twice a year once in January and once in May to give a continual supply of home bred lamb all year round. All lambs are reared on grass and are not intensively housed for fattening.
